It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of IRC’s founding director, Hans van Damme. Hans was a visionary leader and dedicated advocate for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Hans began his journey with IRC in 1968 when it was an information centre hosted on behalf of WHO by the Netherland’s national Institute of Drinking Water Supply. In 1981, he became the first director following IRC’s transformation into an independent foundation.
Under his 27‑year leadership, Hans transformed IRC from a small knowledge hub into a globally respected organisation. He championed a holistic approach to water supply - not merely providing infrastructure, but empowering communities through education, maintenance, and local ownership.
His perspective laid the foundation for sustainable WASH systems that continue to guide IRC’s work today.
In recognition of his service to international WASH development, Hans was honoured in 1991 as an Officer of the Order of Orange‑Nassau by the Dutch government—a tribute to his remarkable achievements.
At IRC’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2019, Hans reflected on the organisation’s early days: the collaborative spirit, the importance of social engagement alongside infrastructure, and the growing global influence of IRC in setting sustainable WASH standards.
Hans van Damme’s legacy continues in every empowered community, every robust local sanitation service, and every IRC staff member who embraces people-centred, sustainable WASH systems.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
He may be gone, but the foundation he built will continue to inspire and sustain for generations.
