Access to safe water and sanitation is a basic human right, yet inadequate financing remains a major barrier to achieving universal coverage in Ghana. Our latest briefing note, “From commitments to action: Financing equitable WASH services in Ghana”, highlights the urgent need for increased investment and smarter financial strategies to strengthen water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) systems nationwide.
The challenge
Despite progress, disparities persist. According to the 2023 JMP report, 74% of rural residents have access to at least basic water services, while 12% rely on limited services and 14% depend on unimproved or surface water sources. In contrast, 98% of urban populations enjoy basic services, with only 2% relying on limited water services. This gap underscores the need for targeted financing to ensure rural communities are not left behind.

Closing the WASH financing gap requires collaboration between government, development partners, civil society, private sector actors, and communities. By aligning investments with robust governance and accountability mechanisms, Ghana can accelerate progress towards SDG 6 and ensure equitable services for all.
