| Abstract | The 1996 Stockholm Water Symposium focused on how to replace the fragmented approaches of the past by effective strategies for integrated and sustainable resource management. There was a call for a Blue Revolution, through the establishment of a Global Freshwater Convention, to bring about a change in attitudes and behaviour and to mobilize public opinion to ensure the availability of adequate freshwater of the right quality. The proceedings address the following issues: intersectoral competition for water; groundwater for the next generation; reducing the risk of water-related diseases; fulfillment of water supply and sanitation objectives; capacity building for integrated water management; communication to bridge different water perspectives; and microbiological complexity in wastewater treatment. |
