Abstract

One hundred and eight rural mothers were interviewed about childhood diarrhoea. The main causes of diarrhoea were reported as being eruption of teeth (67.5 per cent), eating mud (51.8 per cent), worm infestation (47.2 per cent), change of climate (35.1 per cent), poor personal hygiene (34.2 per cent) and changes in diet (25.9 per cent). The majority of mothers practised food restriction during diarrhoea. Seventy per cent consulted their mother-in-laws in the first instance for treatment of diarrhoea. The home remedies tried by mothers were, isabgol husk with curd (30.5 per cent), ghee with tea (28.7 per cent), water boiled with mint leaves (25.9 per cent), local ghutti (22.2 per cent) and unripe mango juice (16.6 per cent). The majority of mothers were not convinced that oral rehydration therapy alone was sufficient to treat diarrhoea.
