The biggest challenge in the Haor areas is that toilets get inundated during the rainy season. The content of toilet pits frequently spills over into the surrounding areas when flash floods enter toilet pits. During the dry season, people often build temporary, rudimentary toilets, which must be abandoned during the rainy season. This means that people may have to revert to using hanging toilets or defecating in the open. This paper explains the current situation and suggests alternative low-cost sanitation technologies.
