| Abstract | This case-study country report examines government leadership for the National Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Management Information System (NWASH-MIS) in Nepal. NWASH-MIS tracks the status of WASH services within local governments’ jurisdictions, undertakes life-cycle cost assessments, and conducts system pillar assessments for each locality. In doing so, it is designed to support the formulation of local level WASH plans and ensures these are integrated with provincial and federal planning processes. NWASH-MIS was recently institutionalised within the country’s WASH sector planning, monitoring and accountability architecture through the Water Supply and Sanitation Act (2022) and the Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Policy (2023). However, its history goes back to 2019 when it was first designed as a rural water supply monitoring and evaluation tool and evolved through a number of stages before its present formation. |
