Abstract

Political Economy Analysis (PEA) is a structured method to guide the development of evidence-based political engagement strategies to support systems strengthening. WASH Systems for Health partners already have expertise in stakeholder engagement and WASH systems strengthening approaches; PEA builds on this by examining the wider local, national and international systems within which decisions about WASH services are made..

This learning note summarises the PEA method and how it can be used to inform programme strategies for politically informed systems strengthening. It has been developed based on a series of PEA workshops held with WASH Systems for Health partners in early 2025.
